JETPAD HOMES

I've been fortunate to work with a new client that has a neverending supply of amazing properties. JetPad Homes is a high end luxury properties rental service. They cater to very high caliber properties for events, production and of course vacations. I've already shot a few homes that surpass 10,000 sq ft and multi million dollar value.

I have a property to photograph tomorrow in Palm Desert. When describing the place the owner mentioned endless views, infinite pool and Ritz Carlton as the neighbor. I think I am in for a treat.

SOUTH BAY

Always fun to shoot in the South Bay. With all the driving I do around this crazy city of LA, I really appreciate the times I can work 5 min from my house. This property was for a real estate agent and is typical of the newer built residential homes in the area. I believe this one is by Tomaro Architecture.

D3 Architecture

Through a referral I picked up a project with Arminda at D3 Artchitecture. The home is a great sample of pueblo/santa fe architecture with a modern approach. Built on a steep canyon hillside in Bell Canyon, it was challenging to get any great angles of the rear west face. With some creative maneuvering, I was able to capture some distinct perpectives on the exterior. I love shooting interesting residential structures and this is one that fits my list. I hope to work with Arminda more in the future.

In attempts to build my commercial/editorial portrait portfolio, I've started a new project called 100 Friends. The main focus would be to capture them in activities that would be useful in the sports/lifestyle/culture realm. And, 100 seemed such a nice and accomplished number that I didn't really stop to think about the actual feasibility of this project. I know I have 100 friends. But, 100 friends doing something interesting?

Julius Shulman 1910-2009. A master at the art of Architectural Photography. I study his images as often as I can and have no doubt that much of my work is inspired by his genius. A true icon of photography.

A great documentary covering his career recently won many awards at various film festivals. Visual Acoustics is a must see.

Crazy fun night for CC's birthday party. We set up a room with a couple of backdrops, some seriously fun props, and a trampoline. Combine that with a crew of fun outgoing people and mayhem ensues.

Photobooth

Party +Booze + Pics = Goodtimes. Lately, photography seems to have dug a deep niche in "photobooth" images. I usually bring the wide angle lens to my friend's parties and people love it. With guys like Cobrasnake and Ronys Photo booth making names for themselves, why not hit it hard as well. Just another fun way to make cash while releasing that shutter.

So, this Saturday, I'm shooting a party and we'll see how it goes! Should be fun.

Project Ideas

I tell myself I really need to shoot each and everyday and good things will come. So in order to keep photos coming, I have some project ideas that will keep me busy when not shooting paid work. One project is just a very basic approach to shooting my friends. They're always available and it would be a cool collection of images to build over time.

Also, since I shoot primarily architectural, I have come up with an idea to approach shooting many of the abandoned retail/business/commercial properties that have gone out of business. First it reflects the times we are living in with this insane economic downturn. Second i think the imagery can be very powerful in its simplicity. Once large retail centers now shown in a state of delapitation.

Another idea came about while driving up and down the streets of Beverly Hills, Bel Air, etc. So many amazing homes exist in these neighborhoods, with many undoubtedly designed by acclaimed architects. Yet so many of these homes are hidden or partially obscured by high walls and gates, forbidding the general public to appreciate these great home designs.

And finally, I'm on the road probably more time than I am even in homes shooting. The streets of Los Angeles are showing their faces to me as I pass and I really need to start documenting the very unique and interesting things I see on a daily basis. It just a treasure trove of images waiting to be produced. I think i might even bail on digital for this, buy a cheap 35mm yashica or something and shoot it entirely on B+W.

2 months later! Geez. Gotta keep on this. Things have been busy! Keeping up with RE shoots. I've worked with a couple new interior designers. Through my cousins Danny and Richard at Diventure Marketing, I've been able to shoot for the AVP tour and hopefully set up a continued relationship with them. A couple weeks back, I helped my buddy Fred Sardisco by shooting the Cold Hands Paddle in San Pedro that he puts on each year.

On top of all the shooting, I've hooked up with photographer Kenneth Cappello and have been helping out on set and in studio. Within a few weeks I ended up on assisting on a Terry Richardson shoot! Pretty rad stuff.

On the horizon, I have possible shoots with up and coming bands, some more interior designers and the continued RE shoots. Hopefully transitioning into full time ATPstudio clients by the end of the year!

Happy New Year! Its been a while since the last post. Things slowed down in December but the horizon looks busy. I've been able to get more gigs with a couple of new clients. The old clients are hitting me with more work, and I'm getting ready to start assistant work with photog Kenneth Cappello. Mostly office style stuff but very cool op to network, and figure out the biz.

This boat has been sitting on the beach for the last month. It ran ashore after losing anchor in a storm and the owner apparently has been paying the city to not demolish it in hopes of a big storm helping it back out to sea. I had to get some shots before it was gone.

San Diego has some great neighborhoods by the beach and downtown but the mesa area has some rad neon signs that date back decades. I was down there recently and wanted to shoot all 6 signs but only 3 were up and lit. The other 3 will hopefully be up and lit again soon.

November has been steady. I've been able to shoot some great architectural homes and meet some new clients. I have a kitchen interior that is being looked at as a possible cover shot so things are good. Here are a couple fun shots.

After a lot of talk and some major procrastination, the Reed Ave kids reunited out in Brooklyn where Brian now lives. Greenpoint/Williamsburgh was our hood for the weekend and we got our fill of street art, hipsters and good food.

I took the opportunity to shoot 35mm film with my old Minolta for the first time in ages. Here are some shots.

9/11 Tribute

I drive up to Malibu a lot for shoots and past by Pepperdine University on 9/11. The school had flags up commemorating the victims of that day. It was pretty cool to see but still a heavy reminder of that day. Even more for me in that I was in NYC the day of the attacks. They put up 1 flag for every life lost on the main lawn of the school.

Lightning!

Last week a thunder cell cruised through town and kinda just hung out over the ocean just off Dockweiler State Beach. I hardly moved the camera as the lightning bolts were basically striking the same spot over and over again. The planes from LAX were taking off just over our heads and banking hard left and right to avoid flying right into the storm. Very fun.

Below is a composite of 16 exposures at :30 seconds. You can see plane light trails they turn to avoid the lightning!

This is the first of hopefully many blog entries to come. My main goal is to keep an updated "diary" of all work, photography related on this blog site so friends/family/clients can keep an eye on the latest happenings.

I would love for this blog to turn into a great networking tool in which the people and projects I shoot, have hilights and links to their own appropriate business/projects/websites etc. It just makes sense to establish connections and help others while I move forward in this new phase of my life.

In the end, this blog is also about fun and showing off all the cool things I'm doing. ENJOY!!
